Maureen has keen interest in Litigation and pursuing client’s interests, conducting legal research on commercial and civil matters, employment related matters, family, environment and land matters. Pursuing and conducting alternative dispute resolution, drafting of all legal documents and handling challenging matters.  

Maureen has also been instrumental in protecting the digital space in Kenya through conducting trainings, issuing legal alerts, advising businesses, offering mediation services on complaints filed on data protection breaches and representing the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.

Work Experience:

• Acted for four unsecured creditors of Karuturi Limited, G North & Sons, G4S Kenya. Masaai Mara Sopa Lodge and Carton Manufacturers when Karuturi Limited was recommended for winding up for failing to pay its creditors’ debts.
• Acted for banking and financial institutions and handled all the litigation matters forwarded which included debt recovery, employment disputes and injunctive suits.
• Represented a leading steel manufacturing company based in Kenya to file a suit against a company which had been supplied with steel products but failed to settle the agreed purchase price. My scope of work included researching, preparing the pleadings and ensuring my witness was ready for the hearing. The case was successful and judgment entered in favour of our client.
• Acted for NIC Bank, a secured creditor of Nakumatt Limited before creditors agreed to put the entity under liquidation. We entered into negotiations and the client was paid its debt in full.
• Acted for Brookside Dairy Limited, one of the creditors and a major supplier of the Nakumatt Supermarkets (under liquidation). This included preparing the proof of debt, attending the creditors and meeting and voting on behalf of the client and attending Court.
• Acted for one of East Africa’s largest milk processors in defending their interests in the employment and labour relations court. The Court dismissed the claim against our client noting that the client was right to dismiss the employee and sufficient avenues were granted to the employee to defend the dismissal.
• Drafting and facilitating the registration of  trademarks for multiple clients at the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) registry.
• Handled several matters concerning insurance companies which include recovery and defending the insureds in personal injury cases, motor vehicle accidents and medical negligence. The clients include ICEA Lion Kenya Limited, Britam Insurance, PACIS Insurance, APA Insurance and Madison Insurance. The scope of the work included out of court negotiations.
• Acted for one of East Africa’s largest milk processors against an insurance company in a suit we instituted following the Post-Election Violence of 2007 wherein its lorries were burnt by a mob of angry individuals on the Kericho -Kisumu road. I drafted the pleadings, client interviews and conducted the hearing wherein we won the case for compensation.
• Represented a Kenyan Bank at the Tax Dispute Tribunal which scope of work included reviewing the laws on taxation, reviewing all the documents presented to us by the client, researching and preparing an opinion as to the Kenya Revenue Authority assessment and how to oppose the same, preparing and filing of an application to stay the Authority’s assessment, preparing written submissions and attending the Tax tribunal to defend our client’s interest.
• Conducted and assisted in various sale of property transactions and perfection of security for both individual and corporate clients.
• Prepared several opinions on the new laws enacted and affecting our corporate clients; this included making oral presentations at their offices.
• Represented the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in various Constitutional litigations filed against it.
• Represented the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties before the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal following leadership disputes in the Jubilee Party. The Tribunal entered judgment in our favour.
• Appointed by the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner to mediate over disputes filed before it wherein the parties had exercised the option of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
• Successfully represented Kenya Reinsurance Corporation Limited in an employment Petition filed against it touching on legitimate expectation of term of office which suit included contempt proceedings.
• Represented the Independent Electoral Boundary Commission in various pre-election disputes. Also, acted for IEBC in the Presidential election Petition and in the Parliamentary election petition for Laikipia East parliamentary seat.
